    Sherpa 50 Explorer Kit for Photographer


    Arrived in the high desert of Josua tree with a fully charged Sherpa 50. The first night it helped run my laptop via the Goal Zero Universal Invertor for only an additional 30 min past my laptop battery. Am running a Sony Viao VPCF1 which has an I7 processor and NVidia Gforce video card, etc, etc, etc. Had a lot of trouble powering my laptop via the invertor when used in my car - the invertor kept shutting off or failed to provide consistant power. Could be my laptop draws more power then the Goal Zero 100w UI can handle (the only invertor I used before was a 400w model in my car). Running my laptop with the UI was completley unreliable.

    The next morning I setup the Nomad 13.5 solar panels on my tent and plugged the drained Sherpa 50 in to charge.... 10 hours later, with occassional repositioning of the solar panels to keep direct sunlight on them, I only got 60% charge. The sky was clear and unobstructed so I had perfect conditions for solar power... advertising reports full charge in 4-9 hours. Didn't get that. Fast recharge solution seems to be to use the Nomad 27 solar array which has twice the number of panels (8 instead of 4) or add another Noamd 13.5 to my current one.

    Even though I only got 60% charge of the Sherpa 50 I was still able to recharge 2 batteries for my Canon 40D using the canon chargers on the univaersal invertor connected to the Sherpa 50 and 3 batteries for my Canon 7D using the DUAL-ion+ ReVIVE Series Camera Battery Charger using direct 12v Dc.

    I also have small LIO 12v Dc batteries which need recharging in the field. These batteries only come with 110V Ac chargers so I have to use the UI... reports from others in my field claim inefficient charging this way. Only recharged one and it seemed to recharge pretty quick but haven't used it yet to see if the charge was full.

    For recharging my Canon batteries... using a DC charger was the most efficient but the UI also worked pretty good. Kept my camera shooting but didn't help my laptop at all so was limited on transfering my images from the memory cards which limited my shooting (I do motion time lapse so I take a lot of photos).
